Frequently asked questions about EcoNavis

Extensive CFD analysis on target vessels, such as B-Delta Bulk Carriers, demonstrates consistent performance across a wide speed range (10 to 15 knots) and varying load conditions. For instance, simulations at 50% MCR (Maximum Continuous Rating) showed a 2.74% overall efficiency gain in double-body simulations, rising to 3.56% efficiency at 90% MCR under free surface effects. The device remains effective in both laden and ballast conditions, with specific tests conducted at mean draughts adjusted to ensure accurate performance data.

The Eco Boss Cap is engineered to accommodate the tight clearances often found between the propeller and the rudder. In cases where the rudder bulb is positioned very close to the boss cap, the EBC is redesigned to employ its pressure relief concept in a vertical direction to maintain performance without mechanical interference. Furthermore, by reducing the vorticity and cavitation behind the cap, the device significantly reduces the risk of rudder erosion.

Unlike traditional caps that use fins to physically break up the vortex, the Eco Boss Cap utilizes a chamber and redundant hole configuration to circulate fluid flow. This design redirects high-pressure flow into the low-pressure vortex core, effectively “filling” the vacuum that causes energy loss. This approach not only eliminates the hub vortex but also smoothens the wake and reduces torque demand without the drag penalties or manufacturing complexities associated with fins.
