Innovation and Patents

EcoNavis Solutions holds an exclusive worldwide licence from the University of Strathclyde for the Eco Boss Cap design. We continue to advance hydrodynamic energy-saving devices with a focus on combined propulsive performance and hydroacoustic improvement, including active engagement with the IMO GloNoise programme and the International Towing Tank Committee (ITTC) Cavitation and Noise working group.

Why Eco Boss Cap

  • Vessel-specific hydrodynamic design
  • Designed around the propeller, hub and stern arrangement
  • Practical retrofit for drydock installation
  • Suitable for monitored in-service verification
  • Supported by installed vessel references and CFD studies

Installations

EcoNavis Solutions has installed the Eco Boss Cap in four operational vessels.

Installed vessel

SFYC Araya

Vessel particulars

  • 177.5m LOA
  • 168.0m Lpp
  • 28.2m breadth
  • Timber Carrier

SFYC Araya was one of the first full Eco Boss Cap installations and was used to take the concept from optimisation and manufacturing into onboard retrofit. The project included vessel-specific CFD development, manufacturing drawing issue, casting and machining, factory acceptance testing, and drydock installation.

Post-installation operational analysis comparing before-drydock and after-drydock performance, with fouling correction applied, reported main engine power reductions of 3.1% at 12.0 knots and 3.7% at 12.5 knots. This makes SFYC Araya the first installed reference case with measured in-service evidence.

Installed vessel

Luenho

Vessel particulars

  •  179.99 m LOA
  • 176.65 m Lpp
  • 30.0 m breadth
  • Handysize Bulkcarrier vessel with rudder bulb

LUENHO demonstrates Eco Boss Cap development for a stern arrangement including a rudder bulb. The project included a dedicated vessel-specific design, manufacturing, FAT and installation sequence.

This is an important reference case showing that Eco Boss Cap can be adapted to more constrained stern geometries rather than only conventional open arrangements. In-service performance data demonstrated 3% saving as reported by fleet performance team of the ship owner using high frequency shaft monitoring system and benchmark comparison against 8 sister vessels that are also recently drydocked.

Operational data of Luenho

  • Luenho (with Eco Boss Cap) VS Hanyang (without Eco Boss Cap)
  • Both after drydock and same maintenance work
  • Operational data in same calm weather and laden condition
  • Luenho achieving 4.1% savings at 14 knots compared to sister vessel Hanyang
  • Data monitored and provided by Owner Swire Bulk Pte ltd., Singapore
  • Indicative ME DFOC reduction (mean 0.62 mt/day)

Installed vessel

YC FORTITUDE

Vessel particulars

  • 177.5 m LOA
  • 168.0 m Lpp
  • 28.2 m breadth
  • General Cargo Vessel

YC FORTITUDE is the third installed Eco Boss Cap case and provides strong visual evidence of repeatable delivery, covering manufacture, casting, fit-up, and drydock installation on board.

Installed vessel

KIAN

Vessel particulars

  • 180.0m LOA
  • 30.0m breadth
  • 9.5m TD
  • 44699.0t Displacement

KIAN is the fourth full Eco Boss Cap installations and was used to take the concept from optimisation and manufacturing into onboard retrofit. The project included vessel-specific CFD development, manufacturing drawing issue, casting and machining, factory acceptance testing, and drydock installation.

Case Studies

EcoNavis Solutions has completed a few case studies and awaiting installation.

CFD Case Study

Kamsarmax bulk carrier

Vessel particulars

  • Type: Bulk carrier
  • LOA: 229.0m
  • Breadth: 32.26m

The Kamsarmax study is a useful website case because it shows the potential of Eco Boss Cap on a larger bulk carrier class beyond the currently installed references. The Kamsarmax case-study achieved fuel savings of up to 3.2% by usng CFD optimization.

CFD Case Study

2750 TEU container vessel

Vessel particulars

  • Type: 2750 TEU container vessel
  • LOA: 185.5m
  • LPP: 185.5m
  • Bea,: 35.2m

This CFD study is important because it extends the Eco Boss Cap application to a container vessel configuration. The conducted CFD optimization demonstrated 3.12% overall efficiency improvement for the Eco Boss Cap design under the target operating condition.

CFD Case Study

RO-RO Vessel with Twin CPP

Vessel particulars

  • LOA: 126.5m
  • Beam: 20.6m

The City of Hamburg study provides another useful Controllable Pitch Propeller vessel CFD example. The numerical study achieved 3.31% overall efficiency gain after optimisation across more than 200 investigated geometries.
